![]() ![]() one guy mention editing permissions on the wine prefix it's self. Yeah folks in forums say you need root permission on the wind app for it access the network device, i see this is true for linux apps to since networking tools tend to have 2 shortcuts, one to launch as sudo/root. I wish i understood all that posix stuff all i know is it's standard for operating systems. i assume the errors mean each of those programs that had error is missing files that are needed for certain features, i could be wrong. wine seems to be working but,m i haven't tested it yet. The LTS update showed up so i reformatted and install the LTS version but, unfortunately when installing wine and play on linux and various other tools it threw up a quite a few errors saying the packages couldn't be installed when using the unbtuntu software center. i've tried installing other like smokeping but, couldn't figure out how to launch them since there were not shortcuts made but, at the end of the day it looks like i need pingplotter. most of our guys know how to use pingplotter. Once you delete or fix the permissions on this directory, rerun Wine as a regular user always! Run the following to fix the permissions on your ~/.wine directory if it now has root permissions.Īll the alternatives frankly kind of suck ass, i'm amazed there isn't a much similar alternative. You need to fix the permissions on your ~/.wine directory, this is where all Wine state, configuration and any important data you might have such as installed programs, saved data within Wine programs, etc. If an application complains about a lack of administrator privileges, file a bug running Wine as root probably won't help. You should always run Wine as the normal user you use to login.įor Linux systems, all ideas that Wine needs root can be solved through Posix Capabilities Opens a new window or Posix File Capabilities Opens a new window or correcting other security settings.Īs far as Windows programs are concerned, you are running with administrator privileges. If you have run Wine with sudo you need to fix the permission errors as described in the next question, and then run winecfg to set Wine up again. Running with sudo also has these same risks but with the added bonus of breaking the permissions on your ~/.winefolder in the process. NEVER run Wine as root! Doing so gives Windows programs (and viruses) full access to your computer and every piece of media attached to it. In fact, Wine expressly states that he should not do what he did from their Wiki, link below: wine folder to root the next time he runs any Wine program he'd have to do so as root and not as his user account - a huge no-no. Maybe you need to look at something like cacti?Yeah, I decided to avoid addressing this, but you're exactly right - since he changed the owner of his. Maybe a better way of looking at this is what is another way of achieving the same result? The crash is probably from the change in permissions. You do realise it's probably not launching because you're still trying to launch the app as the local user?
